First-generation student experience – Hilda Salas, Department of Human Development and Family Studies

Hilda Salas is a first-generation student in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at Colorado State University. Salas is a mentor with Campus Connections, a high-impact program that serves youth experiencing adversity. Salas reflected on what it means to be a first-generation student at CSU and encourages first-generation students to create a CSU experience they are proud of.

What does it mean to be a first-generation student?

I think that my first-generation experience at CSU has come with a lot of ups and downs. I think that there have been challenges and obstacles that I have had to get over, such as learning to navigate everything on campus, and not having prior family members or parents who graduated from CSU. However, overall, I have been extremely supported through programs on campus, as well as through friends, staff, and faculty on campus.

What would you tell other first-generation students? What advice would you share?

Speaking to other first-generation students, I would like them to know that they are not alone. If first-generation students are looking to enrich their experience at CSU, I would advise them to be authentic to who they are and to be brave in finding a community at CSU. I would suggest that they apply for supportive programs that would help them attend events that are meant for first-generation students and really get out there and explore as much as you can.

I would also suggest taking advantage of all the resources provided, and know that every place you are on campus, you have earned your spot there. I also advise students to check out the Campus Connections program and take the amazing opportunity it has for all students.

What comes to mind when you hear the words “first-generation student?”

When I think of the words “first-generation student,” I think of perseverance, bravery, commitment and strength.
