Centering racial equity and social justice in research: Henrika McCoy guest lecture on April 10

Dr. Henrika McCoy headshot. On Monday, April 10, from 4-6 p.m. in LSC Ballroom A, Henrika McCoy, associate professor at the University of Texas at Austin, will present “The Research or the Researcher? Centering Racial Equity and Social Justice in One’s Work.” In her presentation, she will speak to why having a personal lens that centers racial equity and social justice is fundamental to achieving racial equity and social justice in one’s own research.

McCoy’s lecture is part of the 4th biennial Brad Sheafor Lecture Series in Social Work, created to honor the service and impact of Professor Emeritus Brad Sheafor. Please register for the event on the College of Health and Human Sciences website.

McCoy is the Ruby Lee Piester Centennial Fellow in services to children and families at the Steve Hicks School of Social Work where she focuses her research on two different areas of interest.

First, McCoy examines how mental health issues precipitate the involvement of black boys in the juvenile legal system while also exploring how those mental health issues are identified, using their related experiences and outcomes to expand the scope of her research.

Second, she focuses on better identifying and understanding the violent victimization experiences of young black males ages 18-24.

This talk will discuss her experiences as a black woman, former clinician, and current academic, as well as highlight how to center racial equity and social justice in research.

This event is free to attend and open to the public. There will be a reception with hors d’oeuvres at 4 p.m. in LSC Ballroom B. Dr. McCoy’s talk will start at 5 p.m. in Ballroom A. If you are unable to attend, a recording of the talk will be available after the event.

You can learn more about McCoy and her research on the University of Texas at Austin website.
