Department of Construction Management senior Vanna Hosanny has been named U.S. Student of the Year by PCL Construction, where she completed a summer internship in 2019.

“I was so surprised and honored,” said Hosanny.

Hosanny, who interned with Denver Buildings for three months over the summer, received the honor as part of the PCL U.S. College Program.

Hosanny expects to graduate in May, and following her graduation, she plans to start work at PCL as a field engineer in late May or early June.

Summer internship

During the internship, Hosanny spent most of her time working on the recently opened Grand Colorado on Peak 8 at the Breckenridge Ski Resort. On the job site, she assisted with coordinating mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, and was involved with several specialty scopes including the ice rink, swimming pools and building commissioning. She also assisted with concrete pre-pour inspections, punch list and tracking final inspections with the building department.

Outside of her daily duties, Hosanny showed a strong interest in gaining a better understanding of the company by also working with business development, proposals, marketing and preconstruction, as well as being a highlight at kickball and other team-building events.

Ryan Odell, senior project manager who worked closely with Hosanny, described her as bold and assertive, and noted that both subcontractors and her PCL team were disappointed to see her internship end.

“She had one of the best attitudes I’ve ever seen in an intern,” says Kyle Snow, project engineer and Hosanny’s mentor. “She showed up every day with a positive attitude and worked really well with the whole team.”

Now in its fifth year running, PCL’s Student of the Year awards were established to recognize each office’s top student — one who had a positive impact on PCL’s work and who best demonstrates the potential to be a future PCL leader. The overall U.S. Student of the Year award provides an opportunity for national recognition and additional exposure to PCL’s U.S. operations and executive team.
