Health and exercise science student Cody FryeQ: Tell us a bit about yourself, where are you from?

A: My name is Cody Frye, and I am from the Glenwood Springs, Colorado, area. I am a recent graduate of the Department of Health and Exercise Science, with a concentration in health promotion, paired with a business administration minor.

Q: What hobbies, clubs, and/or activities do you participate in?

A: I’m a die-hard enthusiast for the outdoor activities this beautiful state has to offer. I enjoy spending my free time camping, hiking, fishing or exercising with friends. Most weekends you will find me driving up I-70 to explore the Rocky Mountains.

Q: Why did you choose Colorado State University, and also the major health and exercise science?

A: I originally was going to go to school out of state, but after making my last college visit to Colorado State, I fell in love with the campus and town. I decided that Fort Collins would be the best place for me to pursue higher education. I chose the health and exercise science major based on my personal interest in sports, anatomy and kinesiology and general aspects of wellness.

Q: What types of things are you doing at your internship?

A: I am currently finishing my internship at West Metro Fire Protection District in Lakewood, Colorado. As a wellness specialist intern, I am tasked with programming rehabilitation programs for firefighters who are offline due to injury or illness. On top of the rehab, I also assist with conducting Physical Ability Tests (PAT), to ensure firefighters are healthy enough to do their jobs. The PAT is an obstacle-style test that measures the aerobic conditioning of firefighters (think Tough Mudder, but much hotter).

Apart from the internship, I am coaching a speed/agility camp for athletes at Green Mountain High School. The athletes run through a series of drills four days per week and also participate in a lifting session for one hour per day. Baseline tests are recorded to monitor progress and adjust the program accordingly.

Q: What are your future career goals? How is your internship and your study at CSU and HES helping you achieve these goals?

A: My future career goals place me working as a wellness manager or programming specialist for a government corporation, or coaching at the collegiate level (preferably as a strength coach). After my experience with the practicums at CSU, I was ready for a continued hands-on approach to promoting health and wellness. The internship at West Metro was the right opportunity for me to dive head first into the world of health promotion. The applicable knowledge I’ve gathered at CSU has helped prepare me to enter the field and share that information with others.

I am a firm believer that you have one million options regarding many aspects in life; education, relationships, work, social life, etc…. but you only have ONE body and mind to take care of, and how you treat that body will affect you for the rest of your life!
