Sarah Lillis (’15) has returned to Colorado State University where she earned bachelor’s degrees in art history and anthropology. Lillis joins the Department of Design and Merchandising and the Avenir Museum as the new education programs coordinator. Lillis grew up in Littleton, Colorado, and held a number of different positions at the Denver Art Museum over the past eight years.

Where are you from?

I grew up in Littleton, Colorado, and moved back there after finishing my undergraduate education. My family still lives there, and I will always call it home.

Tell us about your inspiration and educational paths to working in the museum field

I fell in love with art history in high school during European history class. This led me to getting bachelor’s degrees in art history and anthropology from CSU in 2015. After graduation, I got an internship at the Denver Art Museum which evolved into several different jobs there over eight years. At the same time, I got my master’s in art history and museum studies at the University of Denver. I also taught art history and art appreciation at the Community College of Denver. I have always loved to explore history, art, and human stories with people and love to explore new ways of making for self-expression.

Why did you feel drawn to the education programs coordinator position at CSU’s Avenir Museum?

This position is particularly exciting because of its relationship to the university and the opportunity to try creative things. Because this is a new position at the Avenir, there is so much to build, try, and explore! I can’t wait to make connections around the university and community.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at the Avenir?

I enjoy hiking and bird-watching while outdoors. I also love to read and make art. I have recently been learning to crochet and to bind books.

What was your best takeaway from representing CSU and the Avenir Museum at the American Alliance of Museums national conference held in Denver in May?

This conference provided an excellent opportunity to meet with and learn from other professionals around the world doing the same work and tackling the same challenges. I made many great connections who are interested in our efforts as well as providing a network of support when we need it. Not to mention that I learned a lot!
