Campus Connections is now recruiting student mentors for the Spring 2018 semester

Campus Connections is a multidisciplinary service-learning course that partners Colorado State University students to mentor at-risk youth who are referred through the juvenile justice system, schools and community agencies. Campus Connections is currently recruiting mentors for the spring 2018 semester.

Campus Connections has three primary goals.Campus Connections logo

  1. Promote the resilience and life success of at-risk.
  2. Prepare university students to become highly skilled, civically-engaged human service professionals and community leaders.
  3. Respond to community initiatives to strengthen community systems to better serve at-risk youth and their families.

In order to accomplish these goals, CSU students enrolled in Campus Connections (HDFS 470A) are paired with a youth ages 11-18 years and provide one-on-one mentoring for 12 weeks. Campus Connections is offered on campus on four different nights (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday). Students who participate will choose one of the four sections (i.e., one of those nights) to register for and attend the lab.

Campus Connections is a unique program because it has the structure and therapeutic staff to address mental health and behavioral issues of youths, beyond the scope of traditional mentoring programs. Throughout the semester, CSU students spend the four hours providing both individual and group mentoring. To prepare for and debrief the evening, CSU students arrive to lab one hour before the youth arrive and stay one hour after the youth leave. Youth participants attend lab one evening per week for four hours to receive support towards academic success and future-oriented goals, explore CSU’s campus, eat dinner and participate in social activities with their CSU mentor and other youth participants.

The priority deadline for applications is Monday October 16 at 5 pm and should be dropped off in Gifford 142. Please note that enrollment in the course is limited and applications will be processed in the order they are received.
