Avenir Museum looking for Dior pieces to add to its collection

Story by Doreen Beard

We adore Dior!

The Avenir Museum is looking to expand its holdings of apparel and accessories by French couturier Christian Dior (1905-1957), particularly garments of his New Look style from 1947 to the mid-1950s.

The Avenir Museum would like to hear from anyone who may have Dior to donate!

Do you have Dior to donate? Designer garments are a wonderful resource for CSU Design and Merchandising students to learn about the history of high-end couture and ready-to-wear fashion, and the House of Dior is an important part of this story.

This early 1950s dress (Avenir Museum #86.16.14) is a wonderful example of the “New Look” silhouette of mid-20th century elegance, popularized by French couturier Christian Dior.

The Avenir Museum’s Fall 2018 exhibition Dior’s New Look in the Everyday American Closet (August 6, 2018 – January 4, 2019) will feature objects from the museum collection that are not Dior brand, but represent the pervasive influence on fashion of Dior’s New Look silhouette (such as the 1950s dress pictured here). The Avenir exhibition will complement the Denver Art Museum’s upcoming exhibit Dior: From Paris to the World, which will be on view from November 19, 2018, to March 3, 2019.

Do you also adore Dior? Is there a Dior label dress or suit in your closet that deserves appreciation from other Dior fans?
